Hi Jason, I just finished reading your book today. I'm a huge football fan (Go Bears and Badgers!) and I'm a member of Al-Anon (for individuals who love someone who is an addict and/or alcoholic). For those two reasons, I was attracted to your book. I so appreciated your brutal honesty. However, I was saddened to read your contempt for AA and other 12 step programs. Jason, you had lots of money to find that "perfect" rehab. Unfortunately, the majority of alcoholics and addicts don't have that luxury. I kept hoping that by the end of the book you'd acknowledge that although 12 step programs didn't work for you, you still respect what they do do, and that's Save Lives. Even in your recent posted interview, you speak poorly of AA. I wish I had a gazillion dollars to send all the alcoholics and addicts to the fancy rehab, but that's a fantasy and I choose to live in reality. I was going to give a copy of your book to a loved one (addict and alcoholic who OD'd last spring on coke laced w/PCP, but was saved) who has struggled - like you did (getting clean and relapsing). But I won't now because I don't see it as a hopeful message to an addict. The man I loved doesn't have money like you had. 12 step programs are all he has. I believe they can save his life, but the one thing I DO agree with you is that HE has to choose to get help. I'm comforted however, knowing that he knows where there is help when he is ready. I wish you much happiness, but could you be a bit more respectful (that doesn't mean you have to agree with them Jason to AA, NA, and the others?? Because that may be the only hope many people have. Respectfully, Kim, Chicago

Wikipedia has some good criticisms of AA. As a whole, it can be good for some people, but there are some holes in the program that you could drive a truck through.

    Jason - congrats
