It's a start
Hello everybody thanks for taking the time to visit my blog. A lot of exciting stuff happening in Husker Nation this past week but before I get to that I need to thank my wife, she has been working around the clock getting my website up and running and I think she did an amazing job. I am a computer reject and without her I wouldn’t be able to get online.
Let’s just jump right in, Tom Osborne, new A.D. for the Huskers, hell yeah!! Doesn’t this just get your juices flowing, knowing that the “Man” is back at Memorial Stadium? Let’s make sure he is never again separated from the program like he was over the last 4 years. It was very difficult for me these last few years seeing some of the things that were happening to this storied program. Isn’t it amazing the way that one person can instantly start to heal a wounded nation. As soon as Coach accepted the job, the program was immediately restored with integrity and honesty. I know that Coach is going to do the best he can to make sure this family is never broken up again.
Speaking of family lets talk about the current state of the team, they're struggling. This is a team that has no identity, each weekend I sit down and I try to figure out what this team does best, each weekend I have no answers. They can’t run the ball, their pass game is way too inconsistent and the one that bothers me the most is they can’t play defense. Maybe I shouldn’t say they can’t play defense but rather haven’t shown they can. I truly believe they have enough talent to be competitive but they struggle to put it together. The biggest problem I have with this team is the lack of being physical.
Nebraska teams may not have always been the most talented team on the field but they were always the most physical. Being physical isn’t something that you can just turn on, it is a characteristic that is developed and that process begins and ends in practice. It was shocking for me to learn that our current team only practiced in full pads a few times in training camp and then not again till after the USC game. Trust me this played a huge role in us getting tossed around like rag dolls over the course of this game.
When I played for Nebraska the games were the easy part, practice was the time when your toughness was tested. We would do “live” drills the entire practice, two days a week. This included one-on-one blocking, inside run station, goal-line and a team station. When we walked into the stadium on Saturday, anything they tried to do felt like they were running it in slow motion. The games are NOT won on Saturday but rather during the week.
Another glaring problem has been the lack of emotion by our players. Coach McBride always used to tell us, playing defense is 80% emotion and 20% technique. Defenders need to pin their ears back and fly. You have to play with a controlled rage, 11 hats to the ball, swarming like a pack of rabid dogs. Defense isn’t that complicated, the ball is snapped and you get there as fast as you can.
We need to get a better effort out of the 11 guys we used to call Blackshirts. I was satisfied to see that this past week our guys handed over their Blackshirts. Those practice jerseys aren’t something that you get to wear just because you’re the starter, there is a standard of excellence that goes with the name Blackshirt. This past weekend I saw something, that made me sick to my stomach, and that was repeated defenders jogging after Oklahoma State ball carriers. This is not acceptable. There is one thing out on that football field that each individual has complete control over and that’s your effort. You don’t have to be talented to try hard and put forth maximum effort. I can deal with getting beat but I can’t and won’t tolerate guys loafing. It was difficult for myself and most of my ’97 teammates to watch this lack of effort on Saturday.
This team needs to regroup and start to realize that when they put on those Nebraska jerseys that they're not just playing for themselves but rather for all of the guys who have come before them. They need to play for each other; they need to play for the coaches, for the fans, for all the towns across Nebraska and for anyone who considers themselves a Husker. They have an opportunity this weekend to go into Memorial Stadium and prove their worthy of wearing that red jersey.
I know Coach Osborne has been attending practice the last few days and has had a couple opportunities to talk to the current team, don’t be surprised to see a significant difference in total team effort. The man can have this kind of effect on people in such little time. For someone to say that this recent hiring is a distraction for the team obviously doesn’t know what this man is all about. These kids will sense all the great qualities in this man within 5 minutes of him talking and if their looking for a reason to play hard, they just got one.
Texas A&M is a school that has their own share of problems, this is probably the last game that I think we won’t be a major underdog. They are going to do what they do best and that’s run the ball. Until we prove we can stop the run everybody is going to try and pound the ball down our throats. They have a Thunder and Lightning approach with their running game, using backs Lane and Goodsen. Javorski Lane is 270lbs before breakfast and he won’t go down if we use our special one arm tackling technique. They will run option, so everybody needs to make sure they know their responsibilities.
Offensively let’s get the young pup going early. Give the ball to Castille; he needs to be our featured back. I thought he did a good job in the Okie State game and he adds the dimension of football to our team that we need, that’s power football. Let’s get back to what Nebraska has always done best and that’s pound the ball. Once we get the run game established then you can start letting Keller get involved.
Speaking of Keller, thank God that this kid chose Nebraska. Without him I’m not sure we would have won two games. It’s a shame that a one year transfer is the leader of this team but nobody else wanted that responsibility and I think he’s done a good job given the circumstances. I pray that a few guys step up this week and try to lead this team. We need guys that will grab people by the throat if they see teammates loafing. Do not underestimate the importance of leadership, if you don’t have a leader all you have is a bunch of guys following each other in circles.
Well, that’s about it for my first entry. I wanted to take a second and thank all of my fans and really thank the state of Nebraska. This state has always been a special place for me and my family and the people of this great state have always had my back. You were with me when I was part of those great teams during the ‘90’s and you were also with me when I was battling my demons. When times are tough that’s when you truly know who your real friends are and it doesn’t shock me that most of mine are from Nebraska. Since I’ve moved back to Lincoln everybody has greeted me warmly and I am greatly appreciative. Feel free to comment on this blog and if you have certain topics you’d like to hear about, let me know. Check back in a few days for a new entry.
Later. JP “Double Nickel”

Good to see you posting Jason. Just one comment (not about what you said, but how you said it) - go for a few line breaks
Separate a few of your ideas into paragraphs, because right now, this is really hard to read.
Look forward to seeing all you have to say!

You might also want to change from the white letters on black background. Although I am guessing Jason loves the color scheme. It looks good, just hard to read.

Actually, opthamologists have proven that reverse text is more difficult to read and that's why this color scheme is hard to read.

Hey Double Nickel I am glad to see you got a blog going now because people really want to hear what you have to say man. You have become a mouth piece for the Black Shirts of old. Keep up the good work both on the radio and the web.
I hope you seen the Big Red Rock video to Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones on Youtube.com. You are a lucky man to have such a supportive wife as Sarah.
Just as I wrote to Steve Sipple in response to his article about you joining espn 1480 I would have to say that you are always welcome here by the true fans. Regardless of if you are on the field in uniform or off the field as a former player any true Husker fan wants to see any player succeed at what they do. You root for your team both on and off the field even after they have long left the program.

Jason,

You weren't the only one that almost crapped a brick after finding out that our boys don't practice with full pads. I was literally baffled.

Nice work 55. As an NU graduate of 99, it is a crying shame to see the lack of emotion and hustle these guys play with. I agree the talent is there, but the "want" is not. I also get disgusted by guys like Ruud and Cory throwing up the bones on a 3 and out in the 3rd quarter when we are down 38-0. The Bones are not to be thrown in those situations.

Awesome first entry man, thanks for sharing. I'll be cheering from down here in South Carolina tomorrow.
I'd love to hear more about how practices were run. How the 4 stations, 32 plays each were run. How you were coached to trust in the guy next to you to do his job so you would only have to worry about doing your job. How things were in the locker room before games. Things Coach told you before games, practices. After games/practices and during halftime. When he got angry with you, what did he do? Who were the good cops/bad cops on the staff? Tell me all man, I'd love to hear everything.

Jason, I am a native Nebraskan who has spent my entire adult life away from Nebraska as a member of the United States Navy. There are two things that are my greatest source of pride. I am a Cornhusker and I am a United States Navy Sailor.
Thanks for your candid comments and I couldn't agree more. I do not believe that the current coaching staff has any idea what Nebraska football really is all about.

I agree with most of your assessment, however, I do not agree that Keller is the only QB we have. Gantz wants the job and should have been given some opportunities to show his stuff, especially with Kellers lack luster performance last week.

Jason, you ever thought about getting into coaching? I know you were coached by the best and that obviously has rubbed off onto you. Your comments are great and I think you are exactly right on the the head with coach being in Lincoln again. I am also glad to see that you previous players are welcome again and that TO has made the University put back up the ALL AMERICAN pictures. Anyway to get the pit back open again?
These current boys and I say boys need some leadership and someone to fire them up and stay fired up.

Just bottom line greatness. Did you major in English at NU? I want you to go into that locker room before this game and just read your blog. I am fired up and ready to go in right now and put a hat on the ball. I hope that you and other greats before you can spend time with this team, recruits and during the fall to bring back the tradition, respect and family that Husker football in all about. Being a 3rd generation Husker myself, it gave me a tremendous lift reading your blog and hope that we can get back to our core.
Miss you on the field Brother. You were awesome. Best of luck and keep blogin

It is great to have you back around and commenting on the current state of the program. We all knew there was something wrong. The program has drifted beyong mediocrity but also to something that none of us recognize or understand. Coach Osborne has soothed my aching heart over the past few days and it is calming and reassurinbg just to hear him speak again. He brings the element that has been missing for the past few years, TRUST. We all trust Coach. Everybody knows that he is not looking to make a name for himself and will do everything necessay to start the reconstruction of this program. I can honestly say that If Tom says its in the best interest of the program to keep Coach Callahan around I would believe him and trust him. (I highly doubt that will be the conclusion.) Keep doing what you're doing. GBR!

Just reading your blog shows that you still have the fire! It's too bad that "some" of the players on D don't! I live in MO. now, and it was horrible to watch the Huskers go down to the Missouri Kitty Cats! The butt kicking that the OSU Cowboys put on 'em was sickening. Now this week the Aggie's come to town.
My theory is this, some of these guys think that they can take it easy, avoid an injury, get drafted to some pro team, and live better than they could ever imagine. Wake up fella's! No one want's a lazy ass who can't run, who can't tackle, and certainly not someone who doesn't put forth 110%.
Is T.O. the answer, maybe, maybe not. But like you said "It's a start"

Great to hear you sound off JP. I'd love to know what the rest of the 94,95,97 players have to say about the state of the program. I'm 46 yr old dedicated Husker fan and have been all my life. I was at the OK State game sitting near the top in the south end zone and I could not believe what I was seeing at half time. A virtual river of red leaving the stadium. Ya, no doubt that that we were hurting at halftime being down 38 pts but come on people, giving up on the boys when they need us most and you people call yourselves Husker fans? I love the Big Red and yes we are a hurting team now but I believe that we as fans need to support our kids and let them know that although they may be struggling, we are still supporting them. Those boys have to feel bad enough let alone have thousands of so called fans trashing them. Now let me also say that I do not agree with all of the play calling from the coaches but until they ask me to come down and coach then I guess I can't say a whole lot. I feel the change in the AD's office was much needed and I know that Coach Osborne will do what he feels needs to be done at the end of the year but until then, let all of us Husker fans show our support to the guys on the field, and let them know we still love our BIG RED despite the struggles they are going through now. FOREVER A HUSKER FAN

I coud not have said it better. Watching the current Husker meltdown is hard to watch and I understand that. But to get up and leave the game starting in the middle of the second quarter is even harder to believe. TRUE fans rooting for any team would not do that. You showed the College football world (and High School recruits) that maybe your not the greatest fans around. You showed everyone your only the greatest fans when the team is winning. Thats easy to do. I don`t remember the Nebraska fight song saying "We`ll all stick together, (only if were winnng) in all kinds of weather, for good ol Nebraska U.

Good stuff Jason. You speak for much of Husker Nation that cannot get their words out to the public like you can. Thank God T.O. is back to restore the tradition and culture of classic Husker football and to give former players like yourself an opportunity to visit YOUR house to establish that familiar family atmosphere that has been severly lacking since 2003. Again, good stuff and I look forward to keeping up with what #55 has to say.

I fully agree with the wound beginning to be healed with the naming of Dr. Tom as Interim AD. It was telling on Tuesday when the moment the press release went out, the sun broke through the clouds and Nebraska was Nebraska once again.
One note, I lovee the website. It's very nice. However, the reversed out font on this blog is going to be hell to read over the long haul. I would suggest a white background with black type. I know, it's a little thing, but details matter.

Been a husker fan all my life. I believe with T.O. in place, the order will be restored eventually. I do not need 12 win seasons but just a team that plays with fire and stays competitive- Win or Lose. Most all of us with a team like that, will back the coaches and players with everything we have. Thank you Jason, and all the players in the past that have played for the University, Fans, State, fellow players and for their personal pride in that way, WE LOVE YOU! Hopefully there is still a few proud, hard nosed players in this program and will step up, lift their heads up, and show it for 4 Quarters on Saturday.

Hey Mr. Peter I was wondering if you could talk about the Niles Paul situation? I have thought all year that he should play but they say that he doesnt know the entire offense therefore doesnt get on the field. Shouldnt they just give him a package of about 20 plays with different formations to get him on the field in some way? I think the same would go for Purify, Holt, and Currenski. I was wondering if this could be a topic you will choose to write about? Thanks!

Jason, You made a lot of excellent points. You'er not afraid to offer the candid truth about the way the current team is playing. Not everyone has been so open in their assessment of the 07 team.
If you haven't seen it, and have the time, I would recommend that you rent/view the movie "Miracle' about the 1980 US olympic Hockey team. Especially the extra features that talk about the coach (Herb Brooks) and why he selected the players he chose and how he taught the kids to be a team as opposed to a bunch of individuals all playing in the same uniform. In my opinion it has a lot of parallels to the Nebraska Football mentality and what it takes to be a great team.

Jason, your blog was spot on. This current group of Huskers, lacks any type of heart or emotion. Sam Keller is definitely a leader, but he can't do it alone. I'm extremely disappointed in Ruud and McKeon...they had the potential to be the 2nd coming of Peters and Wistrom and have completely squandered the opportunity. When I read comments like, "I don't care if we give up 1,200 yards as long as we win", that tells you everything you need to know about the mentality of the current players. I was against the firing of Coach Solich, but was willing to give Coach Callahan a chance, but some people are not head coach material. You have to be a motivator...which is why I pray, Coach Osborne gives Bo Pelini a very hard look at the head job at NU. He would bring instant life to the program and attitude thats been missing since Coach McBride's departure. I'm currently stationed in Incirlik Air Base Turkey and have to listen to the games on the internet, I will always support this team, but I pray for the Husker attitude to return soon. I left home (Bradshaw NE) after high school in 1988, and have always identified with myself with the Husker program...I will never turn my back, regardless of the record. But, I'm extremely disappointed by the current team and their lack of intensity. I feel reaasured now that Coach Osborne is back in the mix...hopefully past players will start to hang around and hopefully rub off on the current players. God bless Nebraska and the mighty Big Red! Take care and keep up the great blogs!

Way to tell it like it is, JP. Truly, these players are NOT in the NFL yet. Arm tackling isn't how it's done. Practicing without pads, not practicing on Mondays...are these kids playing for Nebraska or a country club? No wonder they can't perform on the field, they don't perform during the week.
Also, what is your take on Callahan's comments on Osborne, calling him a "crusty old f---," or saying Husker fans should "read a book or go get lost in the sandhills" I'd really like to see your response to that. Thanks!

Good to have you back Jason, hope all is well, was wondering if you have anymore brothers with eligibility, we could use them, what do you think specifically about the D line, and what needs to be done to improve their play? Is it technique or do they just not have the strength to collapse a pocket or move the line of scrimmage upfield.

You hit the nail on the head, I think our defense is too worried about being in the right position instead of just unleashing on anyone who was unlucky enough to end up with the ball. These guys obviously have the talent, they just haven't found that part in them that makes them mean.
I think when Dr. Tom opened the door to former players he was also reaching out for support from people such as yourself, hopefully Coach Callahan has enough common sense to let all you former players come back and instill what true leadership is. There's no doubt the current squad has heard enough of what it means to be a blackshirt, and your right, it doesn't just mean your a starter, it means you earned something above and beyond that, you're not just a Husker, you're a Blackshirt Husker. I spent about a decade on submarines in the Navy during the tail end of the cold war, that is a badge of honor I'll wear to the day I die, I want this team to be able to do the same with their blackshirts.
I'm expecting to see in the next few games the usual swarm of redshirts knocking the snot out offensive players, whether they're lineman, receivers, backs or heaven forbid they manage to get an opposing quarterback dirty (or even make him bleed a little).
We may not win out the season, but I'm hoping that the next time we face any team we've played before, the thought of the bruises and the days spent recovering from a game in Lincoln will be deeply embedded in their memories the next time their lined up across from a group of Blackshirts that is ready to enforce a punishment unto them.
It also wouldn't hurt to have this team watch the video "Crystal Clear" and see future NFL hall of famer Peyton Manning show due respect to the Huskers and the Blackshirts.
One more point I'd like to make is that I live in Colorado now, moved here for a job, and whenever me and my Nebraska cohorts talk about the Corn, it's always "we" and "our" team, the people out here say, "What, your on the team too?". At first I didn't know how to respond, but over time I realized that all Nebraska fans are on the team, and it is our team, this little football team is all we have, and really, it's all we want, it's all I want anyway.
You'll have my support when your undefeated and when your winless, just bring your heart to the game and play for all it's worth, and I'll bring my heart to the game and support you for all it's worth.
GO BIG RED

Hi Jason,
I'm Chris Conradt, 44 years old from Orange County California. Even though I was born and raised in So. Cal. most of my life, I did spend time in Nebraska a couple of years in high school because my dad lives in Lincoln to this day. I'm glad to see your o.k. and made it through your struggles. Christ is merciful and has carried you through the whole time. (Psalm 121)I've been a pssionate husker fan for 37 years and followed your recruitment to nebraska along with your brother Christian. Please continue to tell it like it is and this Nebraska fan in Cali. has your back also. I work at Disneyland and wanted to let you know that if you are ever in Southern California, call me (714-357-0290)or e-mail me and I will get you and your family in. Christians and Huskers take care of eachother and you can count on that. God Bless Brother and hope to here from you soon.
Thanks,
Chris Conradt

Jason- Good to have both you and TO back with the Huskers. I was at the USC game, and couldn't believe the lack of intensity in our players. We have solid athletes on our team, but as you said, they have no physical or emotional drive. The chemistry is wrong. The mix of cultures is not working. Callahan has been signing up good recruits, but hasn't been developing a good product on the field.
Winning is No.1, and we have to start seeing some major improvement on the W side.
Jason- Good to have you back in Lincoln.
I am living in Georgia, but will come back and visit. Keep those demons away my friend.

Great to hear your thoughts - you are spot on. There needs to be a different approach to preparation in the college game and it seems that BC hasn't grasped that. I think the abandonment of the walk-on program hurt deeply. You know what those people meant to the team from an attitude and preparation standpoint. This was a point TO made to BC when he took over. It was ignored.
Thanks for your contribution to the Husker legacy and "welcome home".

Jason, what an awesome read!! How badly would you like to suit up and crack some heads again? I for one would relish that.
One question, though. BC's days are obviously numbered. Who do you think at this point are the frontrunners to replace him?

Jason, excellent points! Any chance you could get hired as NU's assistant coach of lighting a fire under the team's ass?!? Sounds like they need some passion for the game like you and other former players had back then.

Jason, you are absolutely right. These players are soft, because they've been treated softly. When I played college ball (granted, a long time ago)the pre-season camp was two weeks of three a day full uniform practice. We may not have been the most talented bunch, because the college at that time had NO athletic scholarships, but we were TOUGH, and wanted to play. If you didn't have the fire, you didn't make the team. I thought the Huskers were going to have problems when I heard about how many (really how few)two a day practices they had, and in shorts and helmets.
Practicing tough makes you play tough. It ain't basketball.
Bring back the walk-ons, they'll show those scholarship babies what tough is.
Anyway, thanks for your blog. Hope you can help fire things up, with the experience you bring.

Nebraska needs you to get back on the field, putting on the helmet, knocking heads or if you you are not in shape, (hahaha), then coach. It will do wonder for this team.

Hi Jason -
I enjoyed reading your blog and am glad you are back as an active part of the Husker Nation. As a Husker transplant (San Francisco for the last 7 years and now Seattle for the last few months) the last few years have been a struggle. When I told people I was from Nebraska (and an alum) I no longer had pride in doing so, or the feeling that I was part of something special.
With what transpired on Monday & Tuesday, I again feel like the Husker Nation is back and we're on the brink of restoring the tradition, history, uniqueness and aura that made our football program, University and State so special.
PS - I don't want to bust your chops too bad, but when I think of '55' at Nebraska, I think of your brother and remember you as 95.
Best,
-Todd

Jason well said. It was great to see you back in Lincoln. We can all appreciate your input. You have walked the walk and we are proud to call you a Husker and a BLACKSHIRT.
Maybe you and Grant Wistrom should start an elite Defensive Lineman's clinic in Lincoln now that Grant is retired from the NFL... any thoughts on that?

55,
Great to read you perspective on the current state of our beleaguered Huskers. Suffice to say the healing process needs to start as soon as possible.
It was particularly helpful to hear your thoughts on the defensive side of the ball. The mere notion of practicing without pads if ludicrous. It seems week in and week out we find ourselves being manhandled. In fact, its a running joke amongst our group of Husker faithfuls that no one can recall the last time we "laid a lick" on someone. We are (can't believe I'm actually saying this) SOFT. The last thing I thought I'd ever say about the Blackshirts.
So, onward and upward. Living now in Colorado makes for a rough go of it. You definitely hit on it, the 'Skers represent for all whom come before and still to come......let's restore the order and put this sad era to bed. Best of luck to you and continued success.

God bless you brotha! I hear your sentiments and what dissapoints me is how everyone wants to see these coaches fail. For me, I personally would love for these coaches to win and succeed here. I think for the most part, these are good coaches and are good people that can be good examples for Husker players. I don't ever want or wish anyone to fail at anything in life. Again, God Bless You brotha!

Welcome back home Jason! I watched Big Red Wrap-Up when you were on, and I feel you hit it right on the head. Our team is lacking not just in one area, but in the whole dynamics of the game. Leadership is brought on from the person in charge, and there is clearly no leadership qualities in Callahan. In my estimation, this man has got to go, AND SOON!!
Thanks Jason, we need more guys like you around. Are you up for coaching the DLine next year???
Blessings to you Bro,

JP, great to have you back in Nebraska as well. I'm good friends with your brother Damian, so with all of you guys leaving over the years, it's been very refreshing hearing your name as a constant around here. Especially with the state the blackshirts are in right now. What a bunch of, well, you know what I'm thinking. Hey, have you heard anything about Cory McKeon being a cancer on the team? I can tell you one thing, I don't like the way he carries himself and he sure as hell doesn't show me anything on the field. What percent chance do you think that Callahan and Co are gone after this year?
We'll talk soon.

55,
First let me thank you for the time and effort you put into this program. Your D in the 90's was fierce. Somehow, the D over the last few years has lost that tenacity and nastiness. Now that T.O. has provided former players the opportunity to attend practice and granted you sideline passes, perhaps you and your colleagues can pass a little of that along.
You nailed it right on the head when you stated that the Blackshirts represent excellence. I know we have the talent, but the D looks like they are just standing around, not flying to the ball.
Keep up the good work JP. Husker Nation appreciates it.

Great to hear your voice again, Peter. Both through this blog and the radio work that you do.
I get pumped up just thinking about the possibilities that having Dr. Tom back in the Athletic offices can bring.
That being said, it does surprise me that the current coaching staff does not realize that players play like they practice.
Even though I've never played football, I did play HS BsktBall and I feel most HS and College sports have a similar mentality when it comes to practice vs. gametime: "Go at it" in practice so that gametime will seem easy in comparison.
I really can't fault the players much IF the reason that they're getting manhandled in games is due to them having to get up to "game speed" after a week of 1/2 pad walk-throughs against the #2 or #3 units on the other side of the ball...
Is there some fear of "practice injuries", or something???
This isn't the NFL! Practice injuries be damned! It would seem that players are more likely to get injured during the game if they haven't been intense during practice.
Well, that about sums it up for me.
I don't know if the current staff can or is willing to make any major changes in the way things are handled in practice, so this might be a long 5 weeks. I hope not and I'll be screaming my fool head off for the players no matter what.
I appreciate your providing this forum for everyone to hear your thoughts and respond to them. Thank you for that.
GBR!!!

Dear Jason,
Great blog! It's also great to have you back in the state of Nebraska. I am Nebraskan living in Michigan now, but I always tune into the games on the internet. I agree with everything that you said. I don't like to see anyone fail, but I'm just not sure the current coaching staff are good communicators. The thing I've been most disappointed about is their inability to make half-time adjustments. You know full well, that under Osborne and McBride, half-time adjustments were legendary. Thanks for the blog.

As a former defensive lineman, what are some techniques that a D-Lineman can use to get off of blocks? What can they do if they are getting blown off of the ball? Thank you.

Jason, I'm being honest and inquisitive when I ask these questions, please don't take offense. What good is served by you and other former HUSKERS ripping the current players? And how do you guys know what the current players feel and want when supposedly no former players have been allowed any where close to Memorial Stadium?

I justed wanted to take time to agree with the lack of effort on defense. One play especially stood out. In the first quarter when we went down 17-0. The receiver was running down the sideline and McKeon just ran by and "brushed him". How pathetic! I was wondering if anyone else saw this because I have not heard much about it. I hate to call one guy out, but this guy was one of the leaders of our defense last year. Where has his intensity and effort gone?
Great job Jason! I hae enjoyed the blog. I will remain behind this team and every team of ours whether we are 13-0 or 0-11. Remember ....... it is easy standing behind a team when they are on top, but it proves you are a true fan when you support them through thick and thin.
Thanks for your time,

We are all glad to sanity has not been entirely devoid in Lincoln. To see Dr. Osborne back in Lincoln is refreshing and gives you the feeling everything will work out in the end. Losing games is not the end of the world. But to lose the identity the way this program has the past four years is troubling.
I really hope Bo Pellini and/or Turner Gill find their way back to Lincoln. Gill is one of the classiest guys in all of sports and he is what Nebraska is all about.
One of the things that made me so frustrated during the Pederson era was not seeing former Huskers on the sidelines, what is that all about. Talk about a class move by Osborne, the first thing he does as AD is send out an email to former grid iron heros and hangs their pictures on the wall. That tradition is what it is all about and he was smart for recognizing that. I hope we see more former Huskers on the sidelines.
I want to encourage all fans to stand at the game this Saturday and cheer like you have never cheered before. We are Nebraska!!! Cheer and let this kids know that we are proud of their effort, how they have represented themselves and how they have stayed composed, We are Nebraska! Cheer and let them know we are proud of the decent men they are and the good students they are, We are Nebraska! Let the world know that Nebraska is the place everyone says it is, cheer until you have no breath left We are Nebraska!
My 7 year old son and I catch one game a year and I would not trade that experience with him for anything. I could care less if we win or lose, but never want to see my son lose that great experience of going to a game with the greatest fans in sports We are Nebraska!

Powerful writing, Mr. Peter.
I feel fortunate to have found your website via the link provided at huskerpedia. Curious as to what you mentioned within your inaugural commentary about 'your own demons'...I felt compelled to google you and it was then that I came across the 2006 NYT article which also fleshed out succinctly, those demons of which you referred to.
Congratulations on having won your personal battle, so far. It's sometimes a great thing to be a quitter. I was addicted to cocaine and then crack, too - for nearly 4 years in the early 90's. As you stated in the NYT article - it all has to start with the person doing the abuse. I found my own rock bottom in October 1996, and I've been Myself again...since the 16th of that month. One of the few things I have ever quit and yet, won at the same time. Soon, if it hasn't occurred yet, for you...you'll forget all about the darkness you once induced within your life, as have I and thousands of other successful - former addicts. Good luck to you, sir.
You and I are similiar with our passion for the NU Program. You were fortunate to live it, while I have been admiring it from a bit further South. I appreciate your unique perspective towards NU and look forward to many more of your posts.
Keep it real!

hey, jason. i'm thrilled that your battle against substance abuse continues to be successful, and i'm delighted that you're blogging about the huskers.
i grew up in nebraska and, like most kids in the state, looked toward the players and coaches as role models. one of the many things i used to admire during games was the intensity (passion, emotion, etc.) displayed by the players during each play. as you noted, many players on the current team appear to lack this crucial characteristic, and i hope coach osborne's presence will have a positive impact on their future behavior.
keep it up, man! i look forward to more posts.

I listen to the "spread" and enjoy your takes. The Peter family will always be considered Honorary Nebraskan's in my book. I hope you and the rest of the leaders from the past can help this program. I was in school the same time that you were leading the charge. It is good to have you home and I appreciate you being honest with your take on the situation.
A side note, I am glad to see you are where you are today and won that fight with those demons. Adversity will make you stronger.

Hi Jason,
I really enjoyed reading this post. Your comments about this team not being physical are 100% correct. Watching this team get pushed around by the Ball State's of the world is painful.
I am excited that Coach Osborne is back in the fold. To have this man exiled from the program was a joke. He is Nebraska Football.
Finally, I really do hope that this is Callahan's last season in Lincoln. In 4 years he has almost destroyed all that was special about Cornhusker football.

Oh for the love of god, enough about the stupid Huskers. You suck, deal with it.
I've never met a bigger bunch of whiners & arm chair quarterbacks when it comes to UoN football.
Bill Callahan wasn't a good NFL coach, not sure what made you think he could coach at any level.
